Jeffrey Soffer's Fontainebleau Development has submitted plans to replace the Big Easy Casino in Hallandale Beach with a new gambling and entertainment complex, and the city commission took up the required plat waiver on October 13. GamblingNews reported the redevelopment as approved, while filings describe it as the most significant improvement ever made to the property.

The proposal on paper

The new building would occupy about 165,380 square feet at 831 North Federal Highway with slot machines, a card room, a smoking lounge and a music venue. Dining would take roughly 34,300 square feet, including a steakhouse and a sports restaurant; bars and lounges another 11,200 square feet; and administrative offices about 9,800. Site plans include roughly 1,700 parking spaces anchored by a new four-story garage. Las Vegas firm Steelman Partners, whose portfolio includes Caesars, MGM Resorts and Wynn Macau properties, is designing the facility.

Why now

The existing venue traces to 1934, with the current casino building dating to 1963, and it operated as Mardi Gras Casino and Race Track before Soffer bought the site for $12.5 million in 2018, renamed it and ended greyhound racing. The last major renovation came two decades ago, and a portion of the land was sold for about $31 million in December. Modernizing in place also follows the stalled effort to move the gaming license to the Fontainebleau Miami Beach resort, a transfer that never gained traction in Tallahassee.

What approval unlocks

With the plat waiver cleared, the developer can proceed to formal plat approval and a detailed site plan for further commission consideration. Attorney Graham Penn, representing the applicant, cited potential employment and increased commercial activity for Hallandale Beach among the project's benefits.
